About the project

High on the Port Hills, this home commands views from the Southern Alps to the Kaikōura ranges.

A dark plaster base anchors the house while a light bronze anodised upper box floats like a lantern. Deep roof overhangs and landscaped terraces create sheltered outdoor rooms on an exposed site. Slate, oak, quartzite and birch joinery give a warm, neutral backdrop for the clients' art collection.
